Tech Jobs in Government Reports

Jobs at tech companies can appear in both the “Professional and Business Services” and “Information”categories in the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

Here’s how different types of jobs at a tech company would likely be categorized:

1. Information:

Many core jobs at a consumer-oriented tech company would fall under the Information category, particularly because these companies operate as tech companies focused on information, data, and media distribution.

These jobs at B2C tech companies would fit into this category:

  • Software Engineers: Designing and developing software and services.
  • Data Scientists and Analysts: Working on big data processing and analytics.
  • Cloud Engineers: Involved in Google Cloud services and data hosting.
  • Product Managers (in media and data-focused products): Managing products like Google Search, YouTube, Google Maps, and other platforms that focus on distributing information.

2. Professional and Business Services:

B2B tech companies and parts of B2C tech companies have a wide array of business functions that would fall under the Professional and Business Services category, particularly within the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services subcategory. These roles provide support services for a B2C companies operations, but are not necessarily focused on core media or information distribution.

Note that in B2B companies, roles like software engineer and product manager, which appear under “Information” for B2C companies, would likely also show up in Professional and Business Services (because they serve businesses).

In both B2B and B2C companies, these jobs would show up in this category:

  • Consulting and Strategy: Internal business consultants or strategy roles.
  • Legal and Compliance: Legal teams handling corporate and regulatory issues.
  • Human Resources and Recruiting: Talent acquisition and people operations.
  • Marketing and Sales: Roles in managing Google’s business-to-business services, like Google Ads or Google Cloud sales.

Where Key Departments at Google Would Fall:

  • Engineering and Technology (Cloud, Search, AI): “Information”
  • Marketing, Legal, HR, Finance: “Professional and Business Services”
  • Media Platforms (YouTube): “Information”
  • Administrative and Support roles: “Professional and Business Services”
